Dr. Joseph Smedley is a native of Chicago IL where he served as Vice President in the human resources function for Advocate Health Care the largest health care system in Illinois. He is Founder and President of Smedley and Smedley Consulting & Training LLC (www.smedleyandsmedley.comLinks to an external site.) based in Noblesville IN. His firm helps businesses, schools and healthcare organizations foster a workplace which promotes, supports, and improves the mental health and well-being of employees and their families. He is a licensed psychotherapist in the state of Indiana. Dr. Smedley’s private practice provides consulting and counseling for VITAL WorkLife headquartered in Minneapolis MN (https://www.vitalworklife.com/consultants/Links to an external site.). VITAL WorkLife, Inc. is a national behavioral health consulting practice and Employee Assistance Provider (EAP) supporting all dimensions of well-being in the workplace. Clients are physicians and other advanced practice providers (APP’s) in hospitals and health care systems in the US. Dr. Smedley developed the first state-wide conference for physicians on providing culturally competent patient care in collaboration with and accredited by the Indiana University School of Medicine. He served as Project Leader for “Indiana Health Care Disparities Initiative Retreat: Moving from Statistics to Solutions”. The retreat was a forum for key community leaders, presidents of hospital and health care systems and health care executives from private industry to develop a plan to eliminate health care disparities among Indiana’s cultural and ethnic minority groups. Dr. Smedley has held dual appointments as adjunct assistant professor in both the School of Education, and the Purdue School of Science - Department of Psychology, at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is the former Chair of the Department of Psychology at Martin University. Dr. Smedley recently served as adjunct associate professor in the graduate school of Behavioral Science and Clinical Psychology at University of Indianapolis. Dr. Smedley obtained his BS in psychology from Roosevelt University in Chicago, and an MS and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Howard University in Washington, DC. He was also awarded a Certificate for Social Scientists in Neuroscience from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Smedley is a published author and is a member of the American Psychological Association.
