Charles Goesel is completing a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He holds a M.A. in Liberal Studies from Valparaiso University and a B.A. in English from Indiana University. Charles was formerly the Content Coordinator for the National Partnership for Community Training (NPCT), a program of Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services. At NPCT, Charles researched and developed innovative content to aid social service providers in identifying, referring, assisting, and serving survivors of torture. He conducts research on refugees and has published on the effectiveness of group treatment with survivors of torture. In addition, he as has published on peace education, program effectiveness, and learning constructs, as well as on the use of improv in mediation, mediation in a domestic violence context, and on war and domestic violence.
Charles' teaching philosophy is based on cultivating students’ natural tendencies for curiosity, ensuring student progress and academic success by building personal and academic confidence, and by inspiring students to take knowledge gleaned from the classroom to enrich their lives so that they can make a positive impact on their communities. He believes this is best accomplished by creating a student-centered classroom, empowering students to take responsibility for their learning, and engaging with students on a personal and professional level. He encourages students to view education beyond just simply a grade to achieve, but rather to view each lesson and course as a step forward to building the foundation for the contribution that they will make in their lives.
