Bio:

My education:

BA Goshen College in Sociology & Anthropology
MA Ball State University in Sociology & 30+ graduate hours in Anthropology
I have been teaching at the college level for over 17 years. I teach a variety of classes in both Anthropology and Sociology including but not limited to: Human Origins ANTH103, Cultural Anthropology ANTH254, Intro to Sociology SOCI111, and Social Problems SOCI252 to name a few. I am a Full Time Faculty member.
I use a variety of methods in my Face to Face classes, including engagement exercises, group work, videos, and traditional lecture. I try to keep lecture to less than 50% of my class time. I generally have multiple assessment models including exams, written assignments, and quizzes. I expect face to face and streaming (Zoom) students to attend the class, read the textbook, and come prepared to engage the material. I post grades routinely and promptly. I believe in maintaining good communication with my students regardless of class format. I prefer the face to face classroom, but I teach in a variety of formats including: 16week, 8 week, dual credit, online courses, hybrid courses, and via streaming online video courses. The format that students sign up for can impacts the course structure significantly especially the statewide versions online.

In my online classes, I try to communicate with students each week via messages and announcements.  I expect students to be proactive and look ahead at the course work.  I expect students to send me questions via the message feature in Ivy learn.  I respond as soon as I have seen the message but always with in 36 hours.  I try to grade work within 2-4 business days of the due date so items submitted on Friday or the Weekend will be graded generally on Monday but if not then by end of day on Tuesday.  If I cannot do this I will notify the students and explain why.  I respond to discussion boards only during the grading process but monitor the boards to ensure a safe environment for my student's discourse.

My other hats at Ivy Tech:
